Advocating for abortion rights in Belgium

Creating an advocacy tool to provide information on abortion

Ensuring access to clear, appropriate information on a sensitive subject such as abortion remains a major challenge in Belgium today.

Following on from illustrating the abortion process — a tool enabling professionals to explain the different steps of a termination of pregnancy to a public with little, poor or no understanding of the French language in written and/or spoken form — the Fédération Laïque de Centres de Planning Familial (FLCPF) contacted us again to co-create two advocacy tools for the public on the subject of abortion: a booklet and an animated film.

Using previous experience to co-create tools

Drawing on our previous experience and the knowledge we had gained from working with exiled people and healthcare professionals, the development of these tools was facilitated by the materials. The tools show the possible methods, the process and the practical aspects of a request for pregnancy termination, helped by explanatory illustrations.

The aim of these tools is to promote several messages:

  • Abortion is a right, abortion is a choice, abortion is a medical procedure;
  • You are pregnant and do not wish to continue the pregnancy. You can have an abortion, which is an induced abortion.

With Sandra Muller and Jacques Dupont, we co-created a booklet that can be ordered free of charge from the FLCPF store, and an animated video, visible on YouTube (subtitled in French, Dutch, English and translated into sign language).
