Thinking and acting together, facilitating dialogue in association

dialogue communautaire

Many NGOs working on the topic of integration bring together volunteers, employees and beneficiaries. Despite everyone's wishes, dialogue can sometimes be difficult between volunteers who are not trained in social assistance and precarious populations who do not always dare to express their needs.

For the Fondation des Apprentis d'Auteuil, which welcomes every year more than 20,000 young people and 6,000 families, improving this dialogue has become a priority. Ink Link was enthusiastic to participate in this process!

In October 2016, the exchange between Ink Link and Apprentis d'Auteuil began. The Foundation wanted to draw up a guide on "thinking and acting together" developed in a participatory way among employees, young beneficiaries and volunteers. The drawing was intended to serve as a mediation tool to represent "the right attitudes" to better take into account the expectations of the beneficiaries of the Foundation.

It is Augustin Lebon, writer and draftsman, who is committed to this mission. By participating in the discussion workshops Augustin had the ambitious challenge of representing 10 "benchmarks", such as Equality, Responsibility, Listening ... These illustrations will be included in the guide which will be distributed to all Persons working or benefiting from the Foundation.

This is where the Ink Link approach makes sense. To represent an idea, you have to write a script. It is therefore necessary to engage all the partners in order to understand how they interpret this or that concept. For Ink Link, the scenario is at the heart of the realization of an illustrated project. Even with a very high-quality drawing, if the narrative is not worked with the beneficiary audience, if "visual literacy" is not taken into account, then the message may not pass ...

The expertise of a BD scriptwriter is useful. Some "ideas" are indeed more or less visually effective. In comics, we try to avoid to the maximum to show a character with a bubble explaining what he does. It is the drawing that must "show". Following a workshop in an apprentices center with Augustin, here is an example of scenario and illustration. It was necessary to illustrate "the freeze" or "take stock of the situation".

After discussion, this is the proposed scenario

"It is important to stress that the characters are moving and turn to analyze the path traveled. The drawing gives rather the impression of a departure of these characters who watch the obstacles to come.

Put a panel close to the 3 characters meaning that the path still has steps

On the panels write: listening, difference, success, contribution, transformation, opening »

Augustin then proposed two options.

The team could then respond to improve understanding. Here are some example of feed-back:

"I prefer the characters standing.

When one stops, usually one sits down but the fact that one drinks, the other eats ... one gets the impression that the path has been difficult and that the next will be. Feeling painful.

With the characters standing up, feeling dynamic, to move forward. The path was difficult or not ..., it will be or not. The two people side by side manifest the support that one can receive.v

The stop can possibly be indicated by a map that we look at: what I have traveled, what I want to go (down time to better start).

But I like it like that. "

Augustin could then advance on the inked version ...

Puis colorée…

Augustin's feedback :

"This type of project is not obvious because it involves many people, and I have seen different realities within the foundation and it is not easy to gather all the points of view. Discussed and questioned, to ensure that they serve the intended message, leaving little room for improvisation and finding an effective working method to accurately validate each stage of the creation. The world was motivated and enthusiastic! I had a lot of positive feedback on the end result and I'm glad I hope the guide will reach as many people as possible, regardless of status or reality. "
